Tech Bulletin – Crankshaft Balancing

In August 2009, a new deck height dimension was specified for CAT 3500B model engines (Ref. CAT SIS #SEBF8157). This specification calls for a higher deck height meaning the same cylinder blocks that once passed inspection are now out of spec due to low deck height.

Because of the new deck height requirements, customers are now confronted with the added expense of replacing the block in order to bring their engines back up to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Realizing the challenge this represented to our CAT 3500B customers, B&G began research and development to provide a solution that would save downtime and the expense of replacing the blocks. As a result, the company is now proud to offer metal spray as an alternative to complete engine block replacement. This B&G pioneered technique is a combination of new insert technology and precision machining procedures that brings these decks up to the newly specified height, eliminating the need to replace the entire cylinder block.

Building Up Deck Height Offers:

♦ Reduced Vibrational Fatigue
♦ Minimal Bearing Wear
♦ Less Fretting on Wear Surfaces
♦ Improved Longterm Reliability
♦ Better Engine Performance after overhaul

Setting an industry standard, B&G Machine, Inc. upgraded its balancing department with the addition of a custom built, fully computerized machine. With the aid of microprocessor sampling, “third plane analysis”, and custom made bob-weights, we are able to balance HHP crankshafts to exact standards.

More crankshafts can be salvaged, saving both downtime and dollars. Crankshafts with counterweight damage, countrerweight pad fretting, or crankshafts with missing counterweights can now be salvaged. Every crankshaft that is balanced has a computer formulated data sheet that lists the tolerances of the finished product.
