Services
Below is a partial list of the standard shop services we offer for industrial diesels manufactured by Caterpillar, Cummins, Komatsu, MTU, as well as most other major manufacturers. If you don’t see a particular service, or are interested in more information, please contact shop services.
Balancing
In late 2008 B&G Machine upgraded its balancing department with custom-built machines designed for high horsepower crankshafts. Thanks to this new balancing technology B&G technicians now have the ability to perform additional steps other engine rebuilders are hard-pressed to understand. Those extra steps provide assurances that every engine will operate smoother and be trouble-free far longer.
B&G Machine’ balancing department is built around very specialized equipment. With custom bob weights and computerized technology, we are able to balance to the most stringent specifications. We have focused on HHP industrial diesel crankshafts and set the standard industry-wide for this service.
Camshafts
Camshaft geometry is the heart of how an engine runs. Lift, duration and timing are very important in the reconditioning process. At B&G Machine we take extra care to be sure that our reconditioned cams function as if they were factory new. With two Berco camshaft grinders, B&G can restore camshafts to the proper lift, profile, and duration. This produces a “like new” surface for the cam follower to ride on under operation. With today’s high unit loads on camshaft lobes, this is a very important procedure that extends engine reliability.
Connecting Rod Re-manufacturing
B&G Machine has invested in the finest connecting rod reconditioning equipment available. This, compounded with our proven standardized procedures, results in the accurate resizing of connecting rods every time. Having the ability to recondition connecting rods is a unique service that gives B&G the ability to assemble our own cylinder packs. Each rod is magnafluxed and inspected before being reconditioned in one of our Sunnen Rod Hones. Center to center dimensions are precisely machined by using a Sunnen rod boring machine. The use of this full floating CBN pin boring machine allows us to bore connecting rod pin ends in a relaxed state which eliminates any slight bend or twist that may have been manufactured into the connecting rod.
Crankshafts
B&G Machine boasts one of the finest crankshaft departments in the world. Working directly with OEM engine designers puts B&G right on the cutting edge. With three large Berco grinders, B&G can grind any crankshaft up to 14 feet in length. Polishing is done with variable speed polishers and special abrasives that allow us to put the proper finish on the crankshafts. B&G crankshafts meet the tightest reconditioning specifications that the industry brings.
Cylinder Blocks
The cylinder block department at B&G Machine is efficient, accurate, and an awesome sight in itself. With five large automatic Rottler machines, including multiple F99Y three axis machining centers, we have the ability to machine blocks 12 feet in length.
B&G goes unmatched in terms of ability and technology. This equipment, along with close attention to detail makes this department one of the most dynamic in the world. OEM engine designers often utilize our expertise and technology in developing repair strategies. Boring repeatability is within .0001″. CBN technology gives us the ability to machine to exact roughness (Ra) specifications.
Cylinder Head Machining
B&G Machine, Inc. uses the latest tooling which enables precise surface finishes and sizing. Our head department is equipped to machine all manufacturers of diesel and natural gas cylinder heads. Our capacity is from small heads all the way up to the giant CAT 3600 series head which approaches 500 lbs. and has a seat diameter of over 4 inches. One of the added benefits of B&G Machine’s seat and guide tooling is that we can vacuum test the finished product prior to assembly, a process that ensures quality and saves time.
B&G Machine’s cylinder head department is built around two key pieces of equipment: the Serdi 100 and a Rottler SF2 surfacer. Both machines are built for production and accuracy. The Serdi 100 seat and guide machine can cut all three seats in one pass while maintaining concentricity of .002″. This provides an excellent seat for the valves to seal against. The Rottler SF2 uses CBN technology and produces exact roughness (Ra) consistently across the surface of the cylinder head.
Honing
B&G Machine has a Sunnen CV616 honing machine for finishing cylinders. The use of both vitrified and diamond abrasives gives us total control of dimensional size and finish. Our plateau honing procedures help minimize ring fatigue at start up, minimize oil consumption, and provide a durable surface.
General Machining
While engines remain the center of B&G Machine’s business focus, we are extremely well equipped to service all sorts of industrial components. Whether it be balancing, surfacing, boring, crack detecting, polishing, grinding, or roll grinding, we are set up to handle the task. B&G provides solutions and understands the demands that this industry brings combined with the need for a high level of service.
Our CNC machining centers, lathes, welding and a heat treating oven allow us to repair components that many other machine shops would not attempt to salvage. Coupled with our staff’s knowledge and experience ensures quality and reliability on every job.
Magnaflux
Crack detection is done with the use of Magnaflux technology at B&G Machine. We have several ASTM Level II technicians trained to properly identify any inclusions before components are put back into operation. While much of this work is done for engine components, we are also set up to inspect many other non engine related components such as gears, spindles, shafts, etc. up to 20 feet in length and 3 feet in diameter.
Custom Services
B&G Machine also provides a wide variety of diesel services not listed above. If you don’t see a service listed, or aren’t sure specifically what you need, please contact shop services.
