			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today’s high horsepower electronic fuel injected engines demand an overwhelming amount of performance from camshafts. Ironically, camshaft reconditioning or replacement is often overlooked at overhaul. Again and again, we hear about mid life camshaft related failures after overhaul. Qualifying a camshaft for reuse with a simple visible inspection does not work and compromises this important aspect of engine performance and reliability.</p>
<p>At overhaul, camshafts must be reconditioned to restore lift, duration, and profile. Camshafts should also be inspected for inclusions, which can lead to failures after overhaul. Anything short of this leaves the engine vulnerable to major early life failures.</p>
<p>In an effort to focus attention on this area of the engine, B&#038;G Machine has invested heavily in camshaft reconditioning equipment and engineering. With 800 masters, we precision-machine camshafts restoring them to their original profile.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It says quite a bit about our reputation as an industry leader when you learn OEMs regularly come to us to help them develop proprietary repair strategies for their high horsepower diesel blocks. That&#8217;s because B&#038;G Machine Engine Block Department is one of the most advanced facilities anywhere in the world. With six precision machining centers staffed by some of the best technicians you will find anywhere, we&#8217;re capable of completely reconditioning blocks as big as 4,000 horsepower.</p>
<p>Each block that arrives at our Seattle facilities goes through an initial test and inspection that identifies areas of stress and out of tolerance. Through the use of microprocessor controlled technology the block is then machined at every critical dimension to exact OEM standards. Finally the block is cleaned and inspected once again to ensure that it meets or exceeds not just the OEM&#8217;s, but our own high standards. Only once its passed B&#038;G&#8217;s rigorous quality standards is it packed and readied for shipment.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s this sort of attention to detail that gives all our customers the confidence that every reconditioned block that leaves our facility will have a long, productive life in the field.</p>

<p>Water erosion on the deck of a 3500 Series engine blocks is common and leads to premature engine failure. Proper cooling system maintenance helps minimize exposure to this, but is generally not enough to prevent it.</p>
<p>Commonly found around coolant passages, severe water erosion ultimately leads to coolant leaks. With a proper repair strategy at overhaul, however, problem can be eliminated without sacrificing the integrity or life of the block. This will in turn deliver better overall reliability and long-term performance.</p>

Each passage is then machined to allow proper press fit and non-corrosive inserts are installed and machined across all three axes. As leading experts in industrial engine reman, here at B&#038;G Machine we understand this better than most, which is why we built one of the finest dynamometer testing facilities anywhere on the planet. Our dyno testing facilities are capable of handling diesel assemblies of 4,200 horsepower and 14,000 ft lbs of toruqe as well as gas assemblies of up 3,000 horsepower.</p>
<p>Every engine that enters our state-of-the-art center gets a complete top to bottom testing to verify horsepower, torque and all critical engine performance parameters. We also identify trouble spots such as leaks and injector issues. Each engine that leaves the facility also receives a digital printout data log of the engine&#8217;s actual performance, and the assurance that every detail has been addressed.</p>

<p>After nearly 60 years in the business, we tend to take the process of diesel engine remanufacturing for granted. It&#8217;s not until we have VIPs or a <a href="http://www.bandgmachine.com/news/in-the-news/photos-from-the-how-its-made-shoot/" title="Photos from the How It’s Made Shoot">film crew</a> standing in our facilities staring wide-eyed as we tear two tons of engine into a hundred pieces, restore each component, put it all back together and fire it up, that we&#8217;re reminded what we do is actually a carefully choreographed dance that very few can perform.</p>
<p>Each department at B&#038;G is complete with state-of-the-art tooling and technology, and an expert staff to man it. This ensures that every engine re-build we perform &#8212; from the smallest grader to the largest haul truck &#8212; meets or exceeds manufacturer standards and delivers better reliability, longer up-time and lower operating costs across the board.</p>

<p>In 2009 B&#038;G became the first to install a computerized balancing system complete with custom bob weights and tooling allowing us to test and balance crankshafts with unmatched precision.</p>

<p>This system, along with the experienced team of technicians here at B&#038;G, has also allowed us to pioneer the development of new reconditioning and re-manufacturing techniques. Crankshafts with damaged or missing counterweights, counterweight pad fretting and other problems that might have once been considered total losses can now often be restored, reducing downtime and saving our customers dollars in the process.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a new year and with it we&#8217;ve got a lot of exciting stuff going on here at B&#038;G Machine. If you haven&#8217;t been able to keep up on all the latest, last month <a haref="http://www.bandgmachine.com/news/news-releases/bg-machine-adds-sixth-block-machining-center/" title="B&#038;G adds 6th lock Machining Center">we added a 6th block machining center</a> capable of handling 4,000-plus HP engines, making us one of just a handful of industrial diesel reman facilities anywhere the world with this kind of technology and capacity.</p>
<p>A few weeks ago we also <a href="http://www.bandgmachine.com/news/in-the-news/photos-from-the-how-its-made-shoot/" title="How it Made Film Creww shooting at B&#038;G Machine">played host to a film crew</a> from the Discovery Channel&#8217;s popular <em>How It&#8217;s Made</em> series for a couple of days while they shot an episode on what it takes to teardown and re-build a Cat 3516 from the ground up. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In mid-December 2011, a film crew from Discovery TV&#8217;s Science Channel came to the B&amp;G Machine facilities to film an episode of the network&#8217;s popular <a href="http://science.discovery.com/tv/how-its-made/">How It&#8217;s Made</a> series.</p>
<p>With cameras rolling, over a two day period we took them through a complete reman of a Cat 3516 engine from top to bottom. Now that the filming is done it&#8217;s back to Discovery Channel&#8217;s studios for editing and voiceover to complete the episode, which is expected to air during the new season in the summer of 2012.</p>
<p>While, the air date is still six months off, we took a lot of photos of the shoot that we&#8217;d like to share with you now. (Once we&#8217;ve got an air date for the episode we&#8217;ll be sure to let you know.) Enjoy!</p>
