Cylinder heads play a fundamental role in extending the service for the top end of your engine. Proper machining, coupled with new valvetrain parts replacement, produces a head that performs better and more reliably.

Custom machining your cylinder heads (versus exchanging with an OEM program) has benefits that give you more control of how your engine is built and expected to run. Proper machining of the head casting reduces gasket leaks, valve failures, and exhaust leaks. Machining the manifold side of each casting as a matched set eliminates associated broken exhaust bolts, manifold fatigue, and exhaust leaks.

Simply put, custom machining the cylinder head and installing all new replacement parts gives you a cylinder head that will outperform any OEM exchange cylinder head. You avoid reused parts, variable machining from casting to casting, and accepting a core that might have been abused in its past service life.

Machining your own cylinder heads gives you the control of what you are putting back on your engine. With a known maintenance history (versus the unknown history of Reman Exchange castings), custom built cylinder heads work to your advantage right out of the box.

B&G Engines are built with custom machined cylinder heads that are assembled with all new valvetrain. Next time you are building an engine, consider this as an option. If you need a set of heads, we will custom build and match yours so this same performance can be integrated into your rebuild program.

Water erosion on the deck of 3500 Series engine blocks is common and leads to premature failure. Proper cooling system maintenance helps minimize exposure to this failure mode, but is often not enough. A strong repair strategy at overhaul can eliminate this risk for the life of the component, giving you better reliability and long-term performance.

Commonly found around coolant passages, severe erosion leads to coolant leaks. This can be prevented without sacrificing the integrity or life of the block.

With one of the most advanced block departments in the world, b&g offers a solution that extends the life of the block. Using our programmable 3-axis cnc block machines, we can identify each of these water passages in their exact location. Each passage is then machined to allow proper press fit. Non-corrosive inserts are installed and machined using 3-axis programming. Finally, the entire block deck is surfaced for proper gasket sealing characteristics.

Today’s high horsepower electronic fuel injected engines demand an overwhelming amount of performance from camshafts. Ironically, camshaft reconditioning or replacement is often overlooked at overhaul. Again and again, we hear about mid life camshaft related failures after overhaul. Qualifying a camshaft for reuse with a simple visible inspection does not work and compromises this important aspect of engine performance and reliability.

At overhaul, camshafts must be reconditioned to restore lift, duration, and profile. Camshafts should also be inspected for inclusions, which can lead to failures after overhaul. Anything short of this leaves the engine vulnerable to major early life failures.

In an effort to focus attention on this area of the engine, B&G Machine has invested heavily in camshaft reconditioning equipment and engineering. With 800 masters, we precision-machine camshafts restoring them to their original profile.

Every camshaft is straightened to within .0005″, thus minimizing premature wear of the camshaft bearings. Additionally, precise surface finishes can be machined on the lobes while providing a fresh surface for the cam follower to function properly under the high unit lobe pressures and elaborate profiles.

Camshafts are often a weak link in today’s high horsepower engines. But after a B&G overhaul, this “Achilles Tendon” can be made to operate like new. We see the results with customers who consistently tell us they are getting better performance and longer life out of their engines.

In a recent technical bulletin, we discussed the importance of crankshaft balancing and how it directly improves the service life of the engine and related components. This week, we are adding emphasis to that by focusing on the importance of balancing the cylinder packs.

Balancing produces an engine with less vibrational fatigue, minimal bearing wear, and reduced fretting on wear surfaces. In addition, there is a reduction in broken or cracked mounting hardware, manifold cracks (which lead to turbo and fuel delivery problems), support electrical and power supply pumps, and transmissions.

Balancing produces a smoother runner, better performing engine. B&G Machine custom builds every cylinder pack to exact standards within the OEM specifications. The benefits of balancing can be extended (literally) right up to the seat of the operating technician’s personal comfort.

Expert Balancing Offers:

This process starts with reconditioning each connecting rod. Every rod is balanced and matched with other components in the packs. Emphasis is placed on the piston body, which is also matched when the packs are assembled. Finally, each pack is documented, numbered and placed in the corresponding cylinder.

Machining, balancing, and matching the cylinder packs at overhaul is a service that makes B&G’s process unique. This level of detail has proven itself again and again with engines that run better and last longer.

In addition, less vibrational fatigue means less damage and chargebacks at the next overhaul… saving you both downtime and dollars.

In August 2009, a new deck height dimension was specified for CAT 3500B model engines (Ref. CAT SIS #SEBF8157). This specification calls for a higher deck height meaning the same cylinder blocks that once passed inspection are now out of spec due to low deck height.

Because of the new deck height requirements, customers are now confronted with the added expense of replacing the block in order to bring their engines back up to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Realizing the challenge this represented to our CAT 3500B customers, B&G began research and development to provide a solution that would save downtime and the expense of replacing the blocks. As a result, the company is now proud to offer metal spray as an alternative to complete engine block replacement. This B&G pioneered technique is a combination of new insert technology and precision machining procedures that brings these decks up to the newly specified height, eliminating the need to replace the entire cylinder block.

Setting an industry standard, B&G Machine, Inc. upgraded its balancing department with the addition of a custom built, fully computerized machine. With the aid of microprocessor sampling, “third plane analysis”, and custom made bob-weights, we are able to balance HHP crankshafts to exact standards.

More crankshafts can be salvaged, saving both downtime and dollars. Crankshafts with counterweight damage, countrerweight pad fretting, or crankshafts with missing counterweights can now be salvaged. Every crankshaft that is balanced has a computer formulated data sheet that lists the tolerances of the finished product.

Article by Ayse Oge, President of Ultimate Trade LLC

Despite recent financial turmoil and the severe credit crunch, exports increased by 19% in the second quarter of 2008 and real merchandise exports grew by 23% during the 3rd quarter. This export boom was fueled by the weak dollar, which has depreciated nearly 22% against foreign currencies, and made American goods extremely competitive in global markets.

Service exports -comprising education, finance, business and professional services, media, entertainment, foreign tourism and technical services- have been a beneficiary of the export explosion and posted healthy growth.

Export growth has provided clear benefits to the entrepreneurs, owners and workers of firms in export-oriented industries and, more broadly, the U.S. economy as a whole. Exporting firms are typically growing faster and paying higher wages. A growing number of small and mid-sized companies involved in exports have become the main driver of U.S. exports along with their large counterparts in creating jobs in the economy.

B&G Machine Inc., a family-owned Seattle-based diesel engine and components business with less than 50 employees, managed to increase its export business from zero to 35% within the last five years. Johnny Bianchi, the company’s V.P., said the “weak dollar became boon to generate additional overseas revenue.” B&G is currently exporting to Chile, Peru, Canada and Australia. Here are some valuable tips that small and mid-sized businesses can take away from Mr. Bianchi’s successful export venture:

Craft appropriate message that will resonate with your international audience.

Be proactive in exports, and instead of the shotgun approach, be selective in picking the countries you need to export to.

Tailor your products to make them appealing to your global customers.

With the world economy slowing, continued strength in exports is a much-needed panacea to offset the adverse impact of financial problems in the domestic market.
